On CV carburetors the diaphragm is what lifts the slide as engine vacuum rises, and over the years it dries out, stiffens, and develops pinholes. A failed diaphragm causes a flat spot, a hanging slide, and poor throttle response. A fresh diaphragm restores smooth, responsive pickup. Handle it gently and seat it carefully during assembly.
