Valve stem seals control how much oil slips down the valve guides into the combustion chamber. As they harden with age you get oil smoke on start-up and under engine braking, along with fouled plugs. Fresh seals stop the oil burning and clean up the exhaust, making them a sensible addition to any top-end job.
