This gasket seals the valve cover to the cylinder head. As the original hardens and shrinks with age it stops sealing, letting oil seep down the fins, often with a faint burning smell at idle. A fresh gasket restores a clean, dry seal across the top of the engine, and it is an inexpensive fix well worth doing during routine service.
